The Hardangerfjord is one of the main fjords

and the second longest of the Norwegian fjords. It cuts inland from the coast just south of Bergen. The outer parts of the Hardangerfjord consist of a beautiful arhepelago and the amazing Sunnhordland area. The Hardangerfjord has several scenic branches, like the 38 km long Sorfjord, the tiny Ulvikfjord and the Eidfjord.

Tiny Fjord villages:

the Hardangerfjord offers beautifully located villages, like Rosendal in the outer fjord area, Norheimsund & Utne with historic wooden hotels, Lofthus with the wonderful and classic Hotel Ullensvang, scenic Ulvik and tiny Eidfjord – the link to the Hardangervidda National park.

The Folgefonna glacier

is located at the Folgefonna peninsula of the Hardangerfjord, visible from the northern shore of the fjord.

Maabodal canyon & the Hardangerfjord

During the Scandinavian ice age, the ice carved out the Hardangerfjord from the massive Hardangervidda mountain plateau, but it also created the breathtaking Maabodal canyon, cutting its way from the mountain plateau down to sea level of the Hardangerfjord, with the cascading Voringfoss waterfall at the upper edge – offering a spectacular free fall of about 180 metres.

Fruit blossom, fruit and berries

Due to the mild and protected climate of the Hardangerfjord, normally with early spring, the conditions are perfect for fruit farming, thus the spectacular fruit blossom in spring is one of the main features of the Hardangerfjord area. Later in summer, when the apples and the delicious, dark, sweet cherries are ripe, you will find fruit farmers offering their produce along the roads of the Hardangerfjord shores.
