DAY 2 – Oslo to Bergen

Bergen Line: Morning departure by the spectacular Bergen Line, taking you through the scenic Hallingdal valley & across the beautiful Hardangervidda mountain plateau to the mountain station of Myrdal, where you change to

Sognefjord cruise: Disembark in the village of Flam, where you board the express boat for the fjord cruise to Bergen – you will experience the entire Sognefjord, starting with the Aurlandsfjord branch, continuing on the main fjord, with calls at tiny fjord villages en route. At the mouth of the fjord the boat continues along the beautiful coast, through a maze of islands and local fjords, taking you to the very heart of Bergen.

Geirangerfjord

DAY 4 – Geirangerfjord cruise

The ship arrives to the coastal city of Alesund in the morning, then on to a fjord cruise on the beautiful UNESCO Geirangerfjord, with arrival to the tiny fjord village of Geiranger after lunch. Disembark in tender boats.

The Golden Route

Eagle Road: In Geiranger you will join the land excursion coach, taking you from the fjord and sea level via hairpin bends to the Eagle Road, with a marvellous view of the Geirangerfjord below. Across the mountain and down to the fjord, with a short ferry crossing before the coach starts the trip across the next mountain.

Trollstigen hairpin road: Enjoy a breathtaking view & a dramatic descend via the spectacular Trollstigen hairpin road through the most spectacular scenery to Andalsnes fjord village, then along local fjord areas to the town of Molde, where you rejoin the ship.

About the Fjords

Sognefjord in summer by Robin Strand, Visit Bergen

During the ice age both the ice and the rivers carved deep valleys in the mountains. As the climate changed, most of the ice melted, and the valleys were gradually filled with salt water from the coast, thus creating the fjords. Not all of the ice melted though, leaving parts of the high mountain areas covered with ice, thus creating the glaciers.

The main fjords are located in the western parts of southern Norway. The Sognefjord is the largest fjord in Norway, stretching 205 km inland, thus you will find salt sea water in the middle of the country.

The Bergen Line

Bergen Railway on Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau by Tore Bjorback, NSB

A scenic mountain rail line, connecting Norway’s two largest cities; Oslo and Bergen. It is the highest mainline railway line in Northern Europe, crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau at 1300 m above sea level. The line is some 500 km long, and Finse is the highest station with an altitude of 1222 m above sea level.

Flam Railway

The steepest railway in Europe: an incredible journey between mountains and fjord. The Flam Railway is a 20-km branch line off the main Bergen Line, it runs through the Flam Valley and connects the main line with Sognefjord and the Flam fjord village.

The line’s elevation difference is 863 m; with ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 % (1:18). Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flam Railway has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway.

About Trollstigen

Trollstigen excursion by Agurtxane Concellon, Hurtigruten

Trollstigen mountain road pass is a popular tourist attraction due to its steep incline of 10% and 11 hairpin bends down a steep mountainside. The road has an elevation of approx. 850 m (2790 ft), and several viewing platforms overlooking the bends & Stigfossen waterfall, which falls 320 m (1050 ft) down the mountainside.

It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
