You'll experience both the Sognefjord – called "the King of the Fjords" for its massive scale – and the Hardangerfjord, where fruit orchards have thrived along the shoreline since the 1200s when monks first planted them. Between fjords, ride the Flåm Railway, descending through hand-carved tunnels that took seventeen years to complete, and cruise the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord where abandoned mountain farms still cling to impossibly steep slopes. Your overnight stay in Lofthus places you at Hotel Ullensvang, hosting travelers since 1846 when it started as a simple farmhouse taking in visitors. The hotel sits in the heart of Hardanger's fruit-growing region, where May brings pink and white blossoms against fjord waters. You'll also visit Vøringsfossen waterfall, where the viewing platform juts out over the canyon to face water dropping from the Hardangervidda plateau above. The route takes you from Oslo through Bergen's UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf – wooden merchant buildings that survived the city's many fires – with the fjords in between. If you want to experience two of Norway's most iconic fjords without rushing, this tour delivers both depth and variety – from mountain railways to waterfall platforms to orchards that have defined this landscape for eight centuries. Don't be that person who "almost" saw the Norwegian fjords – book now! Welcome to Lofthus – with orchards, fjord views, and the iconic Hotel Ullensvang. Photo by Niels Johansen. At Myrdal station, transfer to the Flåm Railway – an engineering marvel that took seventeen years to build, with twenty tunnels carved by hand through mountain rock between 1923 and 1940. The train descends through landscapes so dramatic that it stops at Kjosfossen waterfall, giving you time to step out and feel the spray from water dropping beside the tracks. Arrive in Flåm, tucked at the end of Aurlandsfjord where the village has welcomed travelers since the railway opened access to this remote corner. Or choose the Fjordsafari RIB boat tour, zipping across the fjord to reach waterfalls up close. In the afternoon, board your express boat for the journey along the Sognefjord – called "the King of the Fjords" because it cuts deeper into the mountains than any other, reaching places where vertical walls rise directly from the water.
