Home of the Northern lights

Alta has rightfully earned its reputation as one of the best places in the world to experience the northern lights. From late September to early April, the Aurora Borealis dances across the Arctic sky, creating captivating displays of color and light. But there’s more to Alta’s connection with the auroras than just its stunning displays. Did you know that Alta is home to the world’s first Northern Lights Observatory?

Placed on the top of Haldde Mountain, the observatory was established in 1899 as a groundbreaking project to study this mysterious phenomenon. Professor Kristian Birkeland was the initiator, and secured the funding for its construction and operation. While the observatory is no longer in use, its legacy shines on, highlighting Alta’s deep connection to the northern lights.

Alta. Áltá. Alattio

Alta, or Áltá in Sami and Alattio in Kven, isn’t just a town—it’s a cultural gateway. Here, you can dive into the rich traditions of Norway’s Indigenous Sami people and the fascinating Kven heritage. Today passionate individuals are working hard to breath new life into Kven and Sami culture and identity. Seeing them as an important part of both history and everyday life.

Celebrations of Sami and Kven cultures are some of the year's biggest highlights. Sami National Day on February 6 is marked with week-long celebrations, including concerts, craft markets, and traditional Sami food. Meanwhile, Kven National Day on May 16 is celebrated with events at the Alta Museum, showcasing Kven history and traditions. Come for the culture, stay for the stories.

Europe’s longest dog sled race

Every march, Alta comes alive with the energy of Finnmarksløpet, Europe’s longest dog sled race. Mushers, handlers, and their incredible dogs take over the town, with both the starting line and finish line happening in Alta. The buzz and energy are impossible to miss as teams gear up for this incredible Arctic challenge.

What began in 1981 with just three participants, has grown into the region’s biggest annual sporting and cultural event. Whether you are cheering from the sidelines or getting up close with the sled dogs, Finnmarksløpet is an experience you wont forget.
