10 essential tips for your cruise journey in Norway

Embarking on a cruise through Norway's breathtaking landscapes offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the country's awe-inspiring natural beauty. As you prepare to set sail with Fjord Travel Norway, we've curated a list of insights to enhance your cruise experience along the Norwegian coast.

  1. Transportation to the port: Plan how you'll get from your hotel to the cruise port. Taxis are readily available, or inquire if your hotel offers a shuttle service. Some city centre hotels in Bergen may also provide bus transfers to the port.
  2. Luggage storage: If you need to store your luggage before boarding the cruise, check with your hotel to see if they can accommodate you. Alternatively, there are limited luggage lockers available at the cruise terminal that can be paid for using a credit card.
  3. Terminal opening time: The cruise terminal typically opens at 11:00 AM. The Bergen terminal is open for luggage check-in from 13:00 to 14:30, passenger check-in begins at 15:00, and boarding starts at 16:00. Check-in at the terminal is possible until 19:30 throughout the year. After this time, you must check in on board the cruise. Cabins are available from 18:00. Plan your arrival accordingly to allow enough time for check-in and boarding.
  4. Cabin information: Most bookings include an outside cabin with either two separate beds or a double bed, private facilities, towels, soap, and a hairdryer. Familiarise yourself with your cabin details upon arrival.
  5. Cabin upgrades: If you're interested in upgrading your cabin, inquire about availability and associated charges at the time of check-in. Upgrades are usually available for an additional fee.
  6. Disembarkation at ports: You can disembark at various ports during the cruise. If the ship remains in port for 30 minutes or more, it's recommended to explore the area. Pay attention to the time allocated at each port.
  7. Payment onboard: All major credit cards are accepted onboard. You can also register for a cruise card when checking in with Hurtigruten, which can be used for all your expenses. The final bill will be settled at check-out.
  8. Meal information: Meals are typically included in your cruise voucher. On Hurtigruten, expect buffet breakfast, buffet lunch, and a 3-course dinner. Havila Voyages offers breakfast, lunch, and a 3-course dinner, all served at your table in the main restaurant (drinks are not included).
  9. Appropriate attire: There's no formal dress code onboard, but it's wise to pack a warm sweater and a wind- and waterproof jacket with a hood. Weather conditions can be windy on deck, so comfortable wind- and waterproof trousers are recommended.
  10. Wi-Fi and smoking: Wi-Fi is available onboard, but signal strength may vary in remote areas. Smoking is generally prohibited inside the ships; designated smoking areas are provided on deck. Inquire at the reception desk for more information.
