How to see the fjords from Bergen

Norway’s breathtaking fjords have long captivated nature-lovers from around the world. Bergen, the country’s second-largest city and the cultural capital of the west coast, is the best place to experience these natural wonders.. With its colourful streets, easy access to the fjords, a range of tour options, and ample opportunity to soak in the city’s atmosphere and attractions, Bergen is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable outdoor adventure.

Choose the Right Time to Visit

For the best possible experience, plan ahead. Visit Bergen and the surrounding areas during the summer months, from late May to early September. You’ll enjoy milder weather and longer daylight hours. The countryside will be at its most green and vibrant and sunny days make for great photo opps. Winter in Norway is gorgeous but not for the faint of heart. Visitors should note that most tours operate on a reduced schedule during the winter months.

Pick The Right Fjord Tour

There are a wide selection of fjord tours in Bergen which cater to different interests and schedules. Whether you prefer a leisurely cruise, a quick trip, plenty of free time, or a little bit of everything, there’s an option for everyone.

Don’t Worry If You’re Short On Time

If your time is limited, you can still see the fjords – and lots of other wonderful attractions! There are options for short day cruises from Bergen that last just the afternoon to comprehensive three day programs that combine plenty of urban and rural attractions.

“Norway In A Nutshell®” Is More Than A Cute Name

“Norway In A Nutshell” sounds super cute but beneath this charming name is a serious travel itinerary that allows visitors to see the best of the country in a short amount of time. Whether you choose to purchase a packaged tour or put together the components on your own (or perhaps a combination of both), you can expect ample time in cities like Oslo and Bergen to get your urban travel fix. You’ll also take in diverse fjords such as the narrow UNESCO Nærøyfjord & the beautiful Aurlandsfjord. Finally, you’ll get a taste of adventure on the Flåm Railway & the Bergen Line. You’ll leave with a great appreciation for Norway’s scenery and culture.

Go Deep In Sognefjord

The Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway and for nature lovers, it’s an essential component to any visit to Bergen and the surrounding area. If you’re travelling all the way to Norway to enjoy the fjords, you might as well go all in. Give yourself a full day to experience the area in all its grandeur on a cruise from Bergen to Sognefjord. You’ll sail past towering cliffs, quaint fishing villages, and stunning scenery.

Explore Bergen By Foot

A visit to Western Norway isn’t just about boats! Before or after your fjord adventure, take some time to explore Bergen on foot. Wander through the city’s narrow and colourful alleyways, where you’ll find quaint shops, cafes, and museums. Bergen’s charming Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-see. Foodies will want to stroll along the Fish Market to sample fresh seafood and soak in the maritime atmosphere.

Be Mindful of the Environment

As you embark on your fjord adventure, remember to be responsible and respectful of the environment. Norway’s fjords are fragile ecosystems. Follow the Leave No Trace principles by correctly disposing of garbage and recyclables, observing wildlife at a distance, and respecting local communities.
