10 Reasons To Experience The Fjord Kingdom Outside Bergen

Incredible Scenery

The fjords near Bergen aren’t just pretty. They offer some of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes you’ll ever encounter. These deep, narrow inlets are flanked by towering cliffs formed during the Ice Age. The water is crystal-clear and deep blue (and yes, you can swim in some designated areas!) It’s impossible to overstate the sheer scale of the fjords. The dramatic contrast between the steep mountainsides and gorgeous waters is unlike anything else.

Iconic Destinations

Bergen is the gateway to some of the world’s most iconic fjords. Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord, in particular, have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their outstanding natural beauty. Nærøyfjord, which is one of the narrowest fjords in the world, features steep cliffs and lush greenery. Meanwhile, with its stunning waterfalls, Geirangerfjord offers unique and mesmerizing views. Exploring these pristine natural wonders is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the sheer beauty of Mother Nature (and cross some pretty cool things off your bucket list).

Outdoor Adventures

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, the fjords near Bergen are the perfect adventurous playground. Whether you’re an avid hiker or kayaker or simply enjoy scenic boat trips, this region has it all. Hiking trails wind through the hills and mountains surrounding the fjords, offering panoramic views and a chance to commune with nature. Kayaking along the calm waters, with the majestic cliffs soaring overhead, provides an intimate perspective of the stunning landscape. If you prefer to enjoy the great outdoors at a gentler pace, don’t worry. Boat trips allow you to relax and soak in the breathtaking scenery while knowledgeable guides share stories about the area’s history and geology. Plus, there are many easy and accessible walking trails for those who like to take it easy.

Unique Wildlife

A diverse assortment of wildlife calls the fjords around Bergen home. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, with numerous species making these cliffs their nesting grounds. During the breeding season, bird enthusiasts can spot white-tailed eagles, cormorants, common eiders, eagle owls, puffins, guillemots, and various other seabirds. Seals are often spotted basking on rocky outcrops. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a fox, hare or porpoise. The fjords are a true natural paradise where the call of the wild is never far away.

Waterfalls Galore

The fjords are a paradise for waterfall enthusiasts, and there’s no shortage here. Some cascading wonders plunge directly into the fjords, creating unforgettable and often ethereal scenes. For example, the Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord is a must-see, with seven separate streams. The Suitor waterfall nearby is charming and romantic (if you’re travelling with your beloved, you’ll want to head here!) Each waterfall has its own story and character; exploring them is an adventure. Photographers will find it hard to tear themselves away.

Spectacular Seasons

Bergen is a gorgeous, year-round destination. In spring, you’ll see fresh blooms all around town (including in pretty planters around Bryggen wharf). Summer is filled with sunshine and warm temperatures that make for comfortable conditions, even if you’re hiking into higher elevations. In autumn, visitors enjoy beautiful colours as the leaves change but very few crowds.. If you’re a painter or photographer, this might just be the perfect time for your visit. Finally, the thick, fluffy snow of winter turns the area into a scene from a fairytale. It’s the ideal time to get cozy in a cafe or head out for some cross-country skiing. However, would-be visitors should note that a lot of tour programs and visitor services are very limited in winter months and temperatures can be frigid. You’ll want to plan carefully to make sure you have the right gear to stay toasty warm and that everything you hope to see is accessible.

Rich Viking History

Bergen boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the Viking Age. The Hanseatic Wharf, known as Bryggen, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to Bergen’s historical significance. Explore the wooden buildings along the waterfront as each tells the story of a bygone era. Additionally, museums like the Bryggens Museum provide insights into the Viking heritage of the region. Visiting these sites feels like stepping back to when Viking longships sailed these waters and the fjords were a hub of trade and exploration.

Quaint Fishing Villages

Along the shores of the fjords, you’ll discover picturesque fishing villages that seem frozen in time. These communities have sustained themselves for centuries by harvesting the rich seafood in the area. The colourful houses, some perched precariously on steep hillsides, create a postcard-perfect scene. Stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets, chat with locals, savour fresh seafood in charming waterside cafes, and pop into little craft shops and art galleries. These villages offer a glimpse into a traditional way of life that remains inextricably linked to the fjords.

Cultural Experiences

Immerse yourself in local culture as you explore the fjords. Enjoy folk music and traditional dances at local festivals and cultural events. Galleries and art exhibitions often showcase the work of talented Norwegian artists. And when it comes to cuisine, the region is renowned for its delicious seafood. The culinary scene in Bergen and the surrounding villages celebrate local flavours, offering an authentic taste of the region’s culture. Savour freshly caught fish and shellfish prepared using traditional Scandinavian recipes. You’ll also find sweet little bakeries, locally produced apple cider, homemade jams, jellies, and preserves.

Friendly Locals

Norwegians are known for their warm hospitality and friendly nature. While exploring the fjords, you’ll have ample opportunities to interact with locals who are more than willing to share stories, offer recommendations, and provide a warm welcome (and maybe a few drinks at the pub!) Whether you’re visiting a cozy café, shopping for handmade souvenirs, or simply striking up a conversation on the docks, the friendly locals will enhance your experience and make you feel at home in this remarkable part of the world, proving that the very best thing about travel isn’t necessarily what you see but who you meet and the memories you make.
